Analysis of the Resolution proposed by the Council of Europe regarding the potential dangers of electromagnetic fields

30/11/2011

The CCARS has recently published a position report in which it evaluates the Resolution proposed by the Council of Europe regarding the potential dangers of electromagnetic fields and their environmental effects, and concludes that the document analysed and presented to the Council of Europe Assembly is not supported by solid scientific evidence and cannot therefore be considered to have been accurately verified in accordance with the scientific method. The report's author, CCARS member Francisco Vargas, notes that the document analysed does not take into account scientific information from competent national and international agencies, committees and organisations and should therefore be considered to be a purely political initiative that does not add any new rational elements which could allow a more efficient management of this problem. The report explains that the resolution presented to the Council of Europe Assembly is highly likely to distort the perception of risk in certain sectors of the population that are sensitive to topics such as this and is therefore likely to increase anxiety and alarm in a wholly unjustified manner. Likewise, the CCARS notes that the Bioinitiative report and the limits established by the Salzburg Conference, which are cited in the proposed resolution and used to form the basis of the CE's proposal, lack scientific and technical credibility and are used to defend a political and ideological position that is not based on any scientific evidence.
