The Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequencies and Health (CCARS) has drafted a report analysing the possible health effect of WiFi systems, which overwhelmingly concludes that, at least to date, there is absolutely no scientific evidence that exposure to the low emission levels of these systems produces adverse health effects in schoolchildren.

The report contains statements to this effect published by the majority of organisations and agencies responsible for assessing the risks posed by electromagnetic fields, who agree that there is no scientific evidence that these...

The Basque TV station EITB recently transmitted the third programme in its “Sceptics” series, which considered a popular and controversial non-scientific fallacy, namely the supposed causal relationship between the electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phone antennae and cancer.

In light of current reasonable doubts in society as a whole, this topic was approached much more carefully than previous episodes as, in contrast to astrology, which often features on the programme, and in the opinion of the presenters, it deserves serious intellectual study.

A group of university...

In light of the numerous questions received by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequencies and Health (CCARS), mainly via its web page, related to the forthcoming launch of a device known as Savewave, which is claimed to “neutralise the electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phones when they communicate”, this body would like to make clear that the efficacy of this device for achieving its stated purpose has not been demonstrated scientifically.

The device, which according to some reports could be marketed at a price of between 30 and 50 euros, has not been verifiably...

The Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequencies and Health (CCARS) has analysed the review document prepared by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which forms part of the World Health Organisation (WHO), on the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the possible carcinogenicity of radio frequencies, and has concluded that it does not either establish or quantify the degree of risk whilst recommending further research to confirm this hypothesis.

This conclusion is in accordance with that reached by the CCARS in its report on the interim results of...

The CCARS has recently published a position report in which it evaluates the Resolution proposed by the Council of Europe regarding the potential dangers of electromagnetic fields and their environmental effects, and concludes that the document analysed and presented to the Council of Europe Assembly is not supported by solid scientific evidence and cannot therefore be considered to have been accurately verified in accordance with the scientific method.

The report's author, CCARS member Francisco Vargas, notes that the document analysed does not take into account scientific...

The Supreme Court has partially annulled the Catalan government's Decree 148/2001, on the environmental management of mobile phone antennae, clearly and accurately confronting the problems arising from the frequent overlap of administrative regulations established by Autonomous Communities and Town Councils regarding high-frequency radio installations. In this respect, the judgement resolves the incompatibilities between the State's jurisdiction in the field of telecommunications and that of Autonomous Communities and Town Councils in matters related to planning, health and the environment...

A recent epidemiological study has concluded that a significant increase in cases of cancer has not been found between persons studied and tumour locations identified. The study has been published in the Boletín Epidemiológico Semanal (Weekly Epidemiological Bulletin), which is published by the Centro Nacional de Epidemiología (National Centre for Epidemiology).

The study was conducted at the request of a number of residents in the old quarter of a town in the Madrid region. The aforementioned residents associated cases of cancer with the presence of a mobile telephone mast or...

The Comité Científico Asesor de Radiofrecuencias y Salud (Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequencies and Health) has just published the paper entitled Resoluciones judiciales sobre riesgos de exposición a campos electromagnéticos: Un singular contraste jurisprudencial sobre el significado jurídico del “estado de la ciencia”  (Court rulings on risks of exposure to electromagnetic fields: A remarkable jurisprudential contrast on the legal meaning of “state of science”). It was drafted by Professor Ricardo de Ángel Yagüez, and will form part of the Report on Radio Frequencies and...

A position document produced by the CCARS questions the effectiveness of products and devices which are marketed with the alleged purpose of protecting people from electromagnetic fields. According to Doctor Francisco Vargas, the author of the document, the majority of anti-EMF products have not undergone any verifiable scientific tests conducted by recognised, competent, professional institutions.

Doctor Vargas asserts in the document that "in the event that there were a study supporting the claims of a specific product, as a general rule, it must be remembered that one...

Spaniards are among the most concerned European citizens regarding the potential effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs) on health; at the same time, however, they are among the least informed Europeans on the issue, according to the data obtained in the special Eurobarometer 2010 regarding the effects on health of EMFs.

Emilio Muñoz, president of the Comité Científico Asesor de Radiofrecuencias y Salud (Scientific Advisory Committee on Radio Frequencies and Health)(CCARS), has analysed the results of this survey and has concluded that Spanish citizens are among those who admit...
